With back to school season comes budgeting to ensure a child has what they need to thrive. And some families may want to know if free or reduced-price meals are an option.

Between 2020 and 2022, federal pandemic assistance made school meals free for every student. But most schools now charge for breakfast and lunch again. Students can rack up debt if they don’t pay.

In order to get free or reduced-price meals in Alabama, families must go through a few simple steps.

  • Step 1: List the names of all the students in the household up to and including twelfth grade
  • Step 2: If any household members currently participate in SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR, provide their case number.

More to know about the school meal application process

For families who do not have access to a computer or printer, school principals and counselors can also provide them with the application.

You only need to submit one application per household, even if your children attend more than one school in their district.

Families can apply for free and reduced price meals any time during the school year by submitting an application directly to their school.

Though the meals are discounted or free, the quality and quantity of food is the same for all children.

“In today’s economy, any assistance that our families and children can get is beneficial to them…We know that assistance is needed for anyone, regardless of their demographics or financial status, there are some times that assistance is needed,” Sonja Anthony, executive director of the Alabama School Nutrition Association, said.

Universal meal programs

Experts say universal meal programs are linked to better attendance rates, test scores and health outcomes among marginalized student groups.

The federal Community Eligibility Provision program allows every student in a school or district to receive free school meals so long as a certain percentage of students qualify for free and reduced price meals or are enrolled in SNAP or Medicaid.

In 2023, the USDA lowered the requirements for districts to offer the program from 40% of students in the district having to qualify for free and reduced price meals, down to 25%.

Last school year, 118 out of 150 Alabama school districts and charter schools participated in the district-wide program, up from just 51 districts that participated in 2022-23, according to recent state data. Just under 480,000 children had access to free meals through their schools.
