Resumo

As evidências que documentam os estereótipos associados ao tamanho do corpo são escassas. Por meio de entrevistas em profundidade, foi explorada a perspectiva de 26 adolescentes da Cidade do México sobre as qualidades atribuídas às pessoas com base no peso corporal no ambiente escolar. Silhuetas antropométricas foram mostradas para que eles compartilhassem sua apreciação em termos do que consideravam saudável, fisicamente atraente e socialmente desejável. Observamos que o ideal de beleza feminina é um corpo esguio, com quadris e busto proeminentes. O ideal de beleza masculina enfatiza o volume e a definição muscular. Os atributos associados a corpos maiores foram: pessoas preguiçosas, comem muito e mal, estão em péssimas condições físicas, não são saudáveis e são pouco atraentes. Tanto los pesos altos como a extrema magreza implicam um afastamento do estereótipo do ideal de beleza, mas o grau de estigmatização é maior em relação às pessoas mais pesadas.
