Saskatoon berries are special – the kind of special that only comes once a year....

10 Best Saskatoon Berry Recipes (1)

As a Canadian, foraging for Saskatoon berries is one of the best parts of the summer. But eating them is even better! And since that once a year is finally here (it's Saskatoon berry season in Canada), I have gathered upThe 10 Best Saskatoon Berry Recipesfrom my fellow food bloggers to share with you!

The taste of a Saskatoon berry is actually quite difficult to describe. Some say they are similar to blueberries, but have a nuttier taste.

SASKATOON BERRIES ARE LIKE BLUEBERRIES, BUT BETTER!

Someone once described Saskatoon berries to me:"Like blueberries, but better.”So simple, yet I cannot think of a better description!

A native to Canadian Western provinces, as well as other parts of North America, the Saskatoon berry ripens in late July/early August. And although this purply-blue berry looks more like a blueberry, it is actually a cousin to the apple.

SASKATOON BERRIES, JUNEBERRIES AND SERVICEBERRIES

If you are not familiar with this little gem of a berry, then you may know it by its alias “Juneberry." Interestingly enough, U.S. marketers started asking Canadian growers to change their labeling a number of years ago, so the Saskatoon berry gets a name change toJuneberryat the Canadian/ U.S. border.

The reason for this was that researchers at Cornell University found that although Americans loved the taste of Saskatoon berries, the name Saskatoon berry didn’t resonate as well as Juneberry. That's why you'll hear it referred to by both names in North America. And in some parts (mostly Ontario), Saskatoons are also known as Serviceberries. But Saskatoon berries, Juneberries and Serviceberries are all the same berry!

I'm lucky to have a Saskatoon berry farm just down the road. The ones that grow wild here are usually very small, but the farm variety are plump and delicious! You've created a wonderful round-up. Can't decide what to make first, the tiramisu or the cheesecake!
